What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

At Washington State Prosthodontics and Dental Implant Center, we believe cosmetic dentistry is both an art and a science. We understand your smile is one of your most important features, not just for your oral health, but for your self-esteem and confidence. One’s smile is one of the first things people notice about each other, and when you have missing, yellow, or misshapen teeth, it can be hard to find the confidence to be your best self in social settings.

Cosmetic Dentistry, also known as esthetic dentistry, is a branch of dentistry differing from general dentistry and what your primary dental care provider offers. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry defines cosmetic dentistry as dentistry aimed at creating a positive change to the appearance of your teeth and your smile while complementing the overall general and oral health of the patient.

Types of Cosmetic Dentistry

As the only board-certified prosthodontists in Bellevue and one of only a handful in the state of Washington, Drs. Russell Johnson and Michael Johnson are highly trained and fully capable of addressing patients’ complex dental needs. At Washington State Prosthodontics and Dental Implant Center, we offer a variety of cosmetic dental services including teeth whitening, dentures, implants, veneers, crowns, and bridges. We give our patients renewed confidence and assurance that yes, something can be done, and we will be there to help, emotionally and dentally, every step of the way.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening, or teeth bleaching, is a process that involves removing stains from the tooth enamel and using bleaching agents to brighten discolored teeth by several shades either at home, or at a dental office. Over time, your teeth can become stained from different drinks and foods such as coffee, tea, and berries. Teeth whitening can reverse those effects.

If you prefer at-home teeth whitening, you have many options. The most common at-home teeth whitening techniques are tray whitening, paint on teeth whiteners, teeth whitening strips, and whitening toothpaste and mouthwash. These techniques often require extended periods of use to show results.

Our most popular teeth whitening option is generally referred to as in-office whitening where we apply whitening gel to the surface of your teeth, and after the 90-minute appointment, you will be able to see results immediately!

Dentures

Another very common service in cosmetic dentistry is that of dentures. Dentures are natural looking, removable, replacement teeth, and there are two types of dentures; full and partial. If a patient has all of their natural teeth removed, they will often have conventional full dentures placed once their gum tissue has healed. Partial dentures are considered a removable alternative to bridges and are used to fill in where permanent teeth have been removed by attaching to a metal frame that is connected to your natural teeth.

Though not everyone is a good candidate for dentures, for those who are, there are many benefits from improving your confidence, to no longer having to limit yourself to soft foods. Checkout our blog post on the benefits of dentures to see how they could improve your life!

“I want to thank you so much for the work you just completed in making my new prosthesis. I have been wearing dentures since I was 15 years old, and this is the first time in the past 13 years that I have been able to bite into an apple, eat a raw carrot or celery without anything moving!” – Gloria C., WSPDIC Patient

Veneers

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells created from materials such as porcelain or resin composite material that are designed to cover the front side of your teeth while looking natural. They are the perfect option for patients wanting to make minor adjustments to the look and feel of their smile. Veneers can easily correct your teeth’s imperfections to help you have a more confident and beautiful smile.

There are many reasons one may look to get veneers. From worn enamel and discoloration to crooked teeth, chips and cracks, and uneven spacing, veneers can be a solution to many insecurities. Though veneers are a great solution for a lot of people, it’s important to note that veneer installation is permanent. Getting veneers is an irreversible procedure as more often than not, dentists will need to shave or grind the teeth to alter the shape in order to prepare it to be fitted with veneers.

Implants

Simply put, dental implants are artificial teeth roots used to replace missing teeth. They are often made of pure titanium or a titanium alloy, and are typically less than half an inch long, Dental implants are placed in the bone to fool the body into thinking there’s a tooth, which in turn stops the bone atrophy.

One large difference between bridges and dentures and implants, is that the former are not fixed to the bone and can therefore be unstable. This can make it difficult to eat or smile with confidence. Implants not only look more natural, but feel and act more like normal teeth, with a stronger biting force. And because they don’t directly rely on neighboring teeth for support, implants don’t compromise the health of your natural teeth. Washington State Prosthodontics and Dental Implant Center offers multiple implant services, learn more about those services here.

“There are no words to describe how your kindness and expertise have changed my life for the better. My hope and self-confidence have been restored with my new teeth, something that I have longed for a very long time. If it were not for you, it is quite doubtful that this would have ever happened.” – Valerie T., WSPDIC Patient
